Walton Wins
There's a new sheriff in town and his name is
Scott Walton.
Walton defeated opponent Cole Butler in
Tuesday's historic election. The final, unofficial results from the
Rogers County Election Board were 20,422 votes for Walton to
Butler's 17,641 (54% to 46%)
Walton hosted the 2008 watch party for several
area races including Peggy Armstrong for County Clerk, Jack Barnes
for County Commissioner and Bill Snyder, for Oklahoma House of
Representatives District 9.
Walton and Armstrong both won their races.
In the County Commissioner race, voters returned Commissioner Mike
Helm by a near 60 to 40 margin. Voters also opted to keep Tad
Jones in the House District 9 seat, despite an attention getting
campaign offered by Snyder.
In the County Clerk's race, voters approved of
Armstrong's previous performance and retained her in her seat with a
vote of 20,721 (55%) to Rebecca Lowe Muratat's 16,952 (45%.)
As the crowd cheered, Sheriff-Elect Walton
addressed his supporters and campaign staff and thanked them all for
their support and hard work.
"This is a tremendous responsibility," Walton
said of the victory. "There's a lot of work to do and I'm
ready to get in there and get to work."
Retiring Sheriff Jerry Prather said that he was
pleased with the Walton win and said he had faith in Walton's
abilities. "We've come a long way but there's a long way still
to go," the Sheriff said.
Prather endorsed Walton early on in the race.
"Now I'm going to spend my time fishing and
chasing my grandkids," Prather said of his retirement.
Walton said he knows there are challenges ahead
and that a lot of hard work will be required but he said he's ready
for the task. "I'm going to do everything in my power to make
sure the people of Rogers County continue enjoying the quality of
life we have here and maintain the safety of our home."
