Will Rogers Day Parade

The annual Will Rogers Day Parade brought Claremore out Saturday afternoon.  With near perfect weather, the crowd was massive. And, if there was any wondering if Scott Walton had widespread public support, it was erased as the parade passed by.

With stellar performances from several marching bands and an emotional appearance by American War Veterans, the 2008 Will Rogers Day Parade was a wonderful family afternoon in Claremore.

Walton for Sheriff hosted three parade floats. The first float featured a gun fight scene played by kids in the spirit of Rogers' cowboy movies.  The second float featured dancers, keeping in step despite a moving dance floor. The third float featured rope twirlers, decked out in cowboy wear.

On the dancing float, Tom and Shirley Goodmon two-stepped into the heart and smiles of the spectators.  As the float passed, scores of people clapped, yelled out greetings and waved.  "They did a remarkable job," said Rose Walton, "I can't thank them enough."

"Even if we weren't in the parade, there's no other place to be when the Will Rogers Parade is rolling," said Walton.  "This is that Rogers County spirit that I talk about and love so much," he added about the community spirit witnessed at the parade.

But the official floats weren't the only entries sporting Walton signs.  From cars to floats to trucks to an eighteen wheeler and even on horseback, Scott Walton supporters were out in force in the parade and on the sidelines.

One parade car bearing a Walton sign carried Russell and Anne Wallis, a couple who met at the Will Rogers Day Parade 70-years ago and have been together ever since.

A recent Claremore Progress article wrote of their long lasting romance and about how the inspiring couple have been celebrating the Will Rogers Day Parade since 1938.

Along with the Wallis' there were scores of other supporters showing their Walton support.  Many wore tee-shirts, carried Scott Walton for Sheriff balloons, wore stickers, or carried pamphlets.  In the parade Walton banners were never far apart.  On Horseback, on wheels, on foot, and even on tractors, Walton signs were everywhere.

"I never expected this kind of turnout," said Walton.  "It's humbling, to say the least."
